Today students began creating a foldable flower book to record their learning about the parts of a plant. As we learn about each plant part we will add facts and new vocabulary to our flowers. Students are excited to use these flowers to take notes during science. Students can't wait to share these with you upon completion.

We had fun learning about seeds today in science. Students began exploring the characteristics of various seeds. They also dissected a bean seed. Students noticed that the bean seed contained a seed coat, a seed leaf, and a developing plant. Tomorrow we begin to plant some of the seeds as we experiment with the different conditions that plants need to grow.
We have begun reading our first chapter book: Judy Bloom's: Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing. We have read the first two chapters together and have begun answering short response questions. Our focus has been on writing complete sentences with capitals and ending punctuation. We have also been locating juicy details from the text to include in our responses. Ask us about Peter and Fudge's crazy weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Yarby.
~ Mrs. Jasewicz This morning we started our reading with a mini lesson about metacognition. I illustrated the importance of thinking while reading by making a "Real Reading Salad." The tomatoes (red paper) represented our thinking and the lettuce (green paper) represented the text read. We discussed sentence starters that we could use when talking about our thinking with others. We used a thought bubble to share our thinking about the text read with the class. Try sharing what you are thinking while reading at home tonight!
~ Mrs. J We had an amazing 1st day of 4th grade in room 148. In math, students worked with partners to record the many varied ways that they can represent a number. Tomorrow we will start our first math module lesson with a continued focus on place value and different ways to represent numbers.
