Here are some photos from the days before December break. Students created family gifts, cards, and bags. They received a little gift (art sets) from me, and they had a fun celebration (thanks for our parents for helping)!

Today we transformed our classroom into a zoo and became zookeepers! Students worked in teams to solve tricky area and perimeter word problems to determine which animal belonged in each zoo exhibit. They worked with their classmates to place each animal in the correct exhibit. We also kicked off our nonfiction text unit by reading a Scholastic News article about whether or not lion cubs should be in a zoo. Students used facts learned in the article to support their opinion about whether or not we should have zoos. Check out a few of photos from our fun day. Students enjoyed our Halloween Party yesterday! They celebrated with fun stations such as a bat hand craft, mummy wrap, spider toss, and lots of snacks. Fortunately, the rain held out just long enough for our costume parade! Thank you to all our parents who helped make the day a success!
When students arrived to school Thursday morning they were surprised to be transformed into detectives ready to solve some math mysteries. Students solved math mysteries that helped them prepare for our End Module 1 Math Assessment. Check out a few more of our photos below: This week, students decorated cookies that were shaped like New York State. They analyzed different maps and located different geographic features. They labeled these on their cookie with frosting, M&Ms and Hersey Kisses. Math is a blast in fourth grade. Here is a snapshot of our Math Workshop block: Students are split into four, need-based, groups who rotate between the following stations: - Work with Teacher (30 minutes) - Collaboration Station (15 minutes) - Technology / Game Station (15 minutes) At our Work with the Teacher station the teacher facilitates as students work together and collaborate with peers to solve tricky math problems using a variety of strategies. Students use accountable talk to respectfully communicate with their math partners and support their thinking with evidence. Students can present their work on the Smart Board using a document camera for all to see and discuss. Students enjoy teaching their classmates newly learned skills and knowledge. The Collaboration Station provides students a chance to practice the skills learned with the teacher. They collaborate with their partner to solve rigorous math problems and discuss as they go. Students review previously learned knowledge and play fluency based math games at the Technology Station. We try to incorporate movement and games as often as possible. Math is so much fun! At the end of math workshop we assess our new knowledge with an Exit Ticket, or another activity. This helps drive instruction for the next day. Ask your child what they like the most about math!
Our first week of 4th grade was a blast! Here are a few highlights. Students arrived Wednesday morning and created an object, out of pipe cleaners, that represented something special about them. Students gathered on the class carpet to introduce themselves and share their creations. Teamwork was a major focus throughout the week. We had a puzzle building competition. Our goal was to see how fast we could build 7 puzzles. Students worked quickly to complete the puzzle at their table. Then, they moved on to help other students at different tables until all the puzzles were complete. Students completed different challenges each day. One day, we focused on speaking and active listening skills. We folded a paper football each time we asked and answered questions. Then we had 1 minute to score as many field goals as possible. We have a 1:1 student to Chrome Book ratio this year. Students logged on for the first time this year and tried out an All About Me assignment on Google Slides through our Google Classroom page. We have an AMAZING crew! Here are some more photos from our week: Today, we wrote heartfelt goodbye letters to our class butterflies. We had spent a lot of time observing them as they completed the life cycle in front of our eyes. It was really hard to let them go. A few of the butterflies hung around for a little while. Check out all of our photos here. Miss McHugh and I transformed our classroom into an ocean to surprise students when they returned to school Tuesday morning. Day 1On the first day, students learned interesting facts about the ocean. Students shared observations about the properties of various ocean artifacts. Students wrote opinion pieces and supported their reasoning for loving the ocean with various details. day 2On the 2nd day, students learned about oil spills. Students participated in an oil spill clean up simulation. 3rd DayOn the 3rd day, students compared / contrasted different versions of the Rainbow FIsh and looked for character strengths displayed in the stories. 4th DayOn our final day, students researched different ocean animals. stationsEach day, students participated in fun ocean themed stations such as
